Aw, yeah. Remember way back when HD DVD and Blu-ray were at each other's throats, and manufacturers were giving out free titles left and right in order to get you to buy one format over another? It seems that little tactic is finding its way back as the holiday / Black Friday season approaches, with Amazon giving users a full $100 off their total purchase when buying an 80GB PlayStation 3 ($399.99), Sylvania NB500 ($199.98) or Samsung BD-P1500 ($211 at current check) along with four Blu-ray Discs from Warner Home Video. Best of all, a fair share of titles are priced well below $25 each, meaning that you'll actually net some discount on the BD player in addition to scoring four "free" flicks. The deal's good through December 31st, but who knows if it'll get any sweeter as the previously mentioned holidays grow closer.

Interview: EA Sports' Moore Calls $133.5 Million Month For Madden 'Vindication'

Interview: EA Sports' Moore Calls $133.5 Million Month For Madden 'Vindication'
Madden NFL 09 has generated $133.5 million in retail sales since its August 12 launch, according to Electronic Arts' own estimates ahead of NPD figures.

The figure represents a 6 percent increase over last year's Madden performance, and EA also says this year's incarnation has earned the franchise's highest critical rating in three years.

"In the month of August we may be bigger than a certain Eastern European gangster," EA Sports head Peter Moore tells Gamasutra, pleased to see Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 and Madden NFL 09 take the first and second spots for the Wii format, respectively, on Metacritic.

Moreover, Moore says Madden acts as an industry bellwether, so good news for it is good news for all. "The industry always feels proud when we can hold a title up against other things like movie releases," he says.

And hold up it does -- according to EA's numbers, Madden NFL 09 sales outperformed the month's top blockbuster films, including Tropic Thunder ($83.9 million), Mamma Mia! ($56.4 million), and Pineapple Express ($79.9 million).

"We're still the red-headed stepchild; we're still not mainstream entertainment," says Moore -- so this contrast between Madden and film sales is "vindication for our industry."

Madden's strong performance also vindicates EA Sports somewhat against concerns from analysts that pre-orders for the title were down year-over year. "We're seeing a distinctly-changing landscape," says Moore. "In previous years, we'd focused on what pre-sales were, and retailers based their opening orders on pre-sales."

But part of the title's strong performance, Moore continues, is credited to a new consumer drawn into the franchise by more casual-friendly features, and that new player is not accustomed to shopping via pre-orders. "We were down double-digits on pre-sales year on year, but it's becoming less of an indicator as far as the overall health of the title," Moore explains.

Opening portals to new consumers, Moore stresses, is "absolutely not about dumbing down the game." Although he claims to be a "relatively decent" Madden player himself, Moore explains it's been difficult for him to compete with his son, who "patronizes, and then just crushes" him, but in particular the AllPlay feature on Wii levels the playing field.

And quality's up, too. "We face a tough time moving needle hard in iterative titles," Moore adds, and this is true especially in sports games. Add in Metacritic scores of 90 and above for NHL 09, and, "We're obviously very optimistic about finishing the year very strongly on Metacritic scores -- which is the only real, objective indicator of quality."

Estimating based on current online data, EA also expects that over 100 million Madden games will be played online in the coming year.

"When consumers look at entertainment value per dollar spent, movies cannot hold a candle to an online game," says Moore. "I've been in the industry long enough to be here before online games even existed. Today is the ninth anniversary of the Dreamcast, and it takes me back to the days we were playing football and baseball through a 56k modem -- and here we are now, and 100 million games will be played online for the lifecycle of Madden 09.

"Madden continues to be one of those one or two titles that can deliver $100 million-plus months, and we've done that again," says Moore. "I'm very happy for the team, and very happy to be able to drive such growth for the marketplace."

Sorry ladies but its becoming BITCH BALL

"When you see guys like Dick Butkus, the Ronnie Lotts, the Jack Tatums, these guys really went after people. Now, they couldn't survive in this type of game. They wouldn't have enough money. They'd be paying fines all the time and they'd be suspended for a year after they do it two games in a row. It's kind of ridiculous."
-- Troy Polamalu

Troy Polamalu is usually soft-spoken off the field, hard-hitting on it. The recent rash of fines leveled at his Pittsburgh Steelers teammates has caused him to take a shot at the NFL, however.

The Steelers safety suggested Wednesday that the NFL is leveling fines for hits more for its own interest than that of the players.

"I think regarding the evolution of football, it's becoming more and more flag football, two-hand touch," Polamalu said. "We've really lost the essence of what real American football is about. I think it's probably all about money. They're not really concerned about safety."

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell called Polamalu's comments "very disappointing'' on "Sportsline with Steve Davis" on WBAL 1090 in Baltimore.

The Steelers have asked the NFL to clarify why Hines Ward, one of the league's best blocking wide receivers, was fined $15,000 the past two games for unnecessary roughness despite not being penalized.

Ward was fined $10,000 following the Steelers' 26-21 win at Jacksonville on Oct. 5, a week after drawing a $5,000 fine for a play in which he stepped over Baltimore cornerback Corey Ivy on Sept. 29. Ward did not draw a penalty on either play.

When you see guys like Dick Butkus, the Ronnie Lotts, the Jack Tatums, these guys really went after people. Now, they couldn't survive in this type of game. They wouldn't have enough money. They'd be paying fines all the time and they'd be suspended for a year after they do it two games in a row. It's kind of ridiculous.
-- Troy Polamalu

Also following the Jacksonville game, Steelers linebacker James Harrison was fined $20,000 for criticizing referee Brian Winter for calling a roughing-the-passer penalty against him. Two other Steelers also drew fines for that game, safety Ryan Clark $7,500 for unnecessary roughness -- a late hit -- and wide receiver Nate Washington $7,500 for taunting. Among the four players, the one-game fines totaled $45,000.

"It's starting to cost too much money to come to work for these guys," coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday.

Tomlin said he planned to call the NFL office about the Ward fines, and team chairman Dan Rooney wrote a letter questioning why Ward was fined.

"We want to be a team and he [Ward] wants to be a player who plays the game the way it's supposed to be played, the way our league wants it to be played," Tomlin said. "We respect that. But we need a little clarity in that situation."

Polamalu said that football's essence is being taken away with the NFL's heavy-handed penalties, saying football "just loses so much of its essence when it becomes like a pansy game."

Polamalu said that past NFL greats wouldn't be able to play the way that made them great in today's game.

"When you see guys like Dick Butkus, the Ronnie Lotts, the Jack Tatums, these guys really went after people," Polamalu told reporters. "Now, they couldn't survive in this type of game. They wouldn't have enough money. They'd be paying fines all the time and they'd be suspended for a year after they do it two games in a row. It's kind of ridiculous."

However, Polamalu made it clear he doesn't defend players who take cheap shots.

"I didn't mean being cheap, but [those who] don't take anything from anybody," Polamalu said. "Know what I mean? Joe Greene wouldn't take anything from anybody. Joey Porter wouldn't. When people came to our field, they knew this was our home field. Nobody was going to mess with us. ... That's the type of attitude I think is really awesome."

Pacman Jones Suspended Indefinitely

Adam (Pacman) Jones, was suspended indefinitely by the National Football League Tuesday for again violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The suspension will last a minimum of four games, and might not play against this year. Last week Jones was involved in an alcohol-related scuffle at a Dallas hotel with a bodyguard the Cowboys were paying to keep Jones out of trouble. Hotel employees called the police when they heard the altercation, which the police termed a “minor disturbance.”

Boondock Saints gets Blu-ray release date, can you say Veritas Aequitas?

by Darren Murph of Engadget.com
It's not often that we get jazzed enough to leap from our seats about a particular Blu-ray release, but we're brimming with excitement over this one. The 1999 cult classic Boondock Saints will be arriving well before Saint Patty's Day 2009 in high-def, as Fox Home Entertainment has selected January 13th as the launch date for the Blu-ray edition. As for extras, you can look forward to a feature audio commentary by writer / director Troy Duffy, another by Billy Connolly, deleted scenes, outtakes, case and crew filmographies and a printable script. The film itself will be presented in a 1080p / AVC MPEG-4 transfer on a BD-50, and as for audio, it'll have a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless track. MSRP is set at $34.95 -- liberating, isn't it?

McCain Advisor Dropped Over Racist 50/Ludacris/Obama Column

By Isamel AbduSalaam

John McCain’s campaign has confirmed the removal of their Virginia leadership representative Bobby May, over the prominent GOP veteran’s penning of a racially charged column parodying the policies of Barack Obama.

The piece, entitled “The (clarified) Platform of Barack Hussein Obama,” appeared this week in The Voice newspaper.

Throughout the column, May lampooned Obama’s ethnically diverse background and how it would affect his presidential policies.

On the drug crisis, May explained that the senator would “raise taxes to pay for free drugs for Obama’s inner-city political base,” while keeping the Constitution’s right to keep and bear arms only for “gang-bangers, illegal aliens, Islamo-Fascist terrorists, and Senator Jim Webb’s aide.”

In addition, May stated that Obama would replace the U.S. flag’s 50 stars “with a star and crescent logo,” a traditional Islamic symbol.

On the White House, May mocked that Senator Obama would “hire rapper Ludacris to paint it black.

Taxes [would] be increased to buy enough paint for the job plus spray-paint for the graffiti.”

Regarding the economy, May ranted that the Democratic presidential nominee would change US currency to pictures of Oprah Winfrey, Ludacris and Shelia Jackson-Lee, while appointing mogul 50 Cent as the new Secretary of the Treasury.

Acknowledging Obama’s family roots in Kenya, May quipped that as president Barack Obama would send most of America’s tax money “to Africa so that the Obama family there can skim off enough to allow them to free their goats and live the American Dream.”

John McCain’s removal of Bobby May comes as his struggling campaign seeks to quell the inciting rhetoric that has lead to his recent events taking on a mob like atmosphere of angry, paranoid, and misinformed voters.

May previously has worked for numerous state Republicans campaigns for such figures as former VA Attorney General Jerry Kilgore, Lt. Gov. Bill Boling, and U.S. Rep. Virgil Good.

Before his dismissal, he also served as the treasurer of the VA Buchanan County Republican Party.

At press time, Senator Obama nor his campaign have commented on the matter.
