Microsoft faces new Xbox 360 reliability accusations Fix would have cost 50c per machine, suit claims

By Mike Smith

Remember last week's story about Jason Johnson, the Illinois man who sued Microsoft over his Xbox 360's alleged habit of scratching his game DVDs?

Documents unsealed in his court case revealed Microsoft discovered its Xbox 360 could scratch discs before it went on sale in 2005, and even got as far as considering three possible solutions to the problem, the Seattle Tech Report revealed today.

The characteristic circular scratches can occur whenever the orientation of the console -- which is designed to be used in either a horizontal or vertical position -- is changed while the drive is spinning. Johnson filed his suit after his console scratched three store-bought game discs, and is seeking $50,000 in punitive damages.

Testimony obtained from a Microsoft program manager indicates that Microsoft became aware of the problem months before the 360's launch when retail demonstration consoles malfunctioned. The company examined three solutions: strengthening the magnets that hold the discs in place, slowing the rotational speed of the discs, and installing rubber bumpers to cushion the discs, but rejected them all. Installing the bumpers could have cost as little as $0.50 per console, the suit claims.

It's not the first time Microsoft has come under fire for alleged foreknowledge of Xbox 360 hardware issues, either. Back in September, an expose penned by VentureBeat writer Dean Takahashi claimed systemic failures in Microsoft's design and quality assurance processes lead to the Xbox 360's now-infamous overheating "Red Ring of Death" failures.

Dumb ASS NJ Giant More Weapons, Ammo Szed at Plaxico Burress’ NJ Home

In “My dumb a$$ forgot to empty the stash after getting knocked” news, the big homie Plaxico is back at it again, this time Feds seized a small cache of weapons and ammunition from his New Jersey home.

Oh for real Ebengregory…sounds like this n*gga just dumb huh man?

Yes.

And now…here’s The Post explaining what happened once the Feds ran up in Plaxico New Jersey home: Anonymous law enforcement sources, said a 9-mm handgun, a rifle and ammunition for three other guns — a .380, a .45 and a .40, the same caliber of gun Burress accidentally shot himself with — were seized during the execution of a search warrant at Burress’ home in Totowa. If the weapons are unregistered, Burress could face more charges in New Jersey in addition to the two felony gun-possession charges he was slapped with following the accidental shooting at a Manhattan nightclub last month. Also found in the search — but not seized, since it was unconnected to any criminal allegations — was a suitcase full of money.

Microsoft Allegedly Knew Xbox 360 Was Scratching Discs

Unsealed documents in a lawsuit over an Xbox 360 that repeatedly scratched a dude's games suggest that Microsoft knew all about the problem, but rejected all three possible solutions prior to the 360's launch.

Of course, this isn't exactly shocking—Dean Takahashi revealed just how startlingly troubled the Xbox 360 was from the get-go. Hiro Umeno, a Microsoft program manager, said in a declaration about the disc-scratching problem that "This is ... information that we as a team, optical disc drive team, knew about. When we first discovered the problem in September or October (2005), when we got a first report of disc movement, we knew this is what's causing the problem."

The solutions considered—and rejected—were to increase the magnetic field of the disc holder (could've interfered with the disc opening and closing), slowing the disc speed (could've increased load time) and to install small bumpers (too expensive, costing between $35 million and $75 million). Instead, they went with a warning in the manual not to move the console with the discs still inside, a warning that Microsoft itself thought was insufficient, according to an internal email. A consultant for the plaintiff notes that Sony and Nintendo "almost always incorporate the possibility that a console could be moved while a disc is rotating inside in the designs of their products."

Moral of the story seems to be not to buy rev. A hardware from Microsoft, perhaps the only major company to not pass muster under our maxim it's safer than ever to do so.

The Dark Knight shatters sales record, moves 600,000 Blu-ray Discs on day one

Sales of next-generation Blu-ray discs alone totaled 600,000 on the first day, leading Warner Brothers to project Blu-ray sales will total 1 million by Saturday. In a surprise, Blu-ray sales were especially strong at grocery stores, indicating that the format is broadening beyond early adopters to more mainstream buyers, notably women.

“Numbers like these in this economic environment firmly establish Blu-ray as where consumers are headed,” said Kevin Tsujihara, president of Warner Brothers Home Entertainment. To compare, “Iron Man” held the previous single-day sales record for Blu-ray discs with about 250,000 sold.
